Our Philosophies
What Do We like Most About Our Jobs?
The answer is the same for all of us: being able to make people proud of their smiles, knowing we have made a difference by achieving that and having patients that have had comfortable experiences in our office, and that patients are confident in our care—enough to recommend us to their families and friends. We also enjoy being able to extend this care to those in great dental need in third world countries. We love our jobs!
How Important Is Patient Education?
Patient education is very important, as that is the only way patients can make informed decisions. As we strive for complete treatments for optimal long-term success and satisfaction with dental treatments, patients must be educated as to their own dental conditions and options available to reach that end. To achieve that end, we keep our staff as well educated as possible, allow time for patient education—including reviewing their detailed photos with them—and if appropriate study models, wax-ups, etc., and employ whatever techniques we feel work best.
How Are Patients Involved with Their Care?
After receiving as much information as possible, patients are usually given options with different treatment plans, including the optimal plan for best results and (if necessary) modifications. Patients then choose which route they are most comfortable with, allowing for the fact that we do not compromise care or standards—we must treat disease in some definitive manner.
How Would Patients Describe a Consultation?
Thorough consultations are typically with our treatment planning coordinator, and they outline options and include education about a patient’s oral conditions. Patient concerns are addressed and costs are clearly outlined.
What Have We Done to Advance Schooling?
Continuous education for dentists and staff, involvement with study clubs and in-office training sessions.
Qualities That Make a Dentist Successful
Being able to listen to and address patient concerns, being able to offer options in the patients best interest without compromising care, having a great staff, being continually educated and having superb clinical skills.
In What Way Is Dentistry like Art?
Using scientific knowledge to meet the emotional and physical dental needs of a patient requires artistry for the aesthetics of the end result. The end result must be aesthetically pleasing and rewarding, no matter what the challenges of achieving that end are, as that is usually what determines the happiness of the patient—do they have a great smile in spite of the fact they may have presented with advanced perio disease; discoloured, broken, decayed, malaligned teeth; etc.?
What Characteristics Comprise a Beautiful Smile?
Smiles are only beautiful if they are seen. We strive to have patients proud of their smiles and show them often. This usually means teeth are a pleasing colour to the patient (some like them whiter than others); they are more or less aligned (some of my favourite smiles have teeth slightly rotated or not in perfect alignment) but usually an even arrangement; there is even gum architecture; they lack diastemas; there is proportionate sizing of teeth—the list can go on and on.
